Green Screen

A green screen is a backdrop made up of a single color that is usually green but sometimes blue.  It can be made of fabric, cardboard, canvas, and even green paint. We have a portable green screen available in the Hub Creative Studio available for you to use or even check out!  Green screens are used to easily add a background photo or video to your project.

There are numerous options to integrate green screens in the classroom whether by the teacher or within student projects. Below are a few ideas:
  • Stimulate interest in a topic
  • News report
  • Teaching in an online environment
  • Tutorials
  • Stop motion animation
  • Opinion Writing

Getting Started

To get started you only need a greenscreen, recording device, and software/app.

1.  The green screen can be made of fabric, cardboard, canvas, and even green paint. Many teachers repurpose science fair boards or grab inexpensive plastic table cloths. Below are some things to keep in mind:
  • Make sure that it is wrinkle free and as seamless as possible.
  • Create it big enough to cover the entire area being recorded.
  • Think about ease and location of storage.
2.  For a recording device, you can use a phone, tablet, chromebook, or computer.
3.  There are numerous software/app options and the selection will depend greatly on your ideas of which to use the greenscreen. Below are a few to check out:
  • DoInk
  • iMovie
  • ChromaVid
  • PicCollage
