What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is the Microsoft version of Google Classroom. It can be used as a standalone LMS or as an extension of your current platform such as Moodle and Canvas. Microsoft Teams focuses on teams staying organized and collaborating.

Microsoft Teams includes communication via chat, call, and web conferencing. It also includes collaboration on files built in Microsoft 365 such as Word and PowerPoint. You can even add your favorite Microsoft or third party apps from Pear Deck to Discovery Education.

How do I access Microsoft Teams?

Louisiana Tech Faculty and Students
If you are a student or faculty member at Louisiana Tech, you have a Microsoft 365 account which includes a 1 TB OneDrive!

To access Microsoft 365, visit https://www.office.com and use "username"@office.latech.edu and your normal password!

Once in your Microsoft account, you can click the Microsoft waffle, grey grid on the top left, and select Microsoft Teams.

Educators and Students
All educators and students qualify for a free Office 365 account. Visit https://www.office.com and create an account.

How do I create a class and add students?

Teams is used for a variety of purposes, thus when you select "Create Team" you will have for options for the type of Team you are creating. If you are creating a class, simply select class. By creating a class you automatically have Class Notebook, assignments, and grade options. Use of Teams is not required to integrate Class Notebook into your class. You can find out more on the OneNote Class Notebook website.

Add Team Members via Search and Select
Once you select the Team type, a prompt to start adding students appears. All Louisiana Tech students and faculty are already connected via Microsoft 365, so you can easily find each student.

Add Team Members via Link and Code
A Second option for adding students is through a "join code." Each team created has a unique join code which allows your students to connect to your class.
  • Look for the three horizontal dots next to the Team name, click and select "manage team"
  • In the upper middle of the screen, select "settings"
  • Select "Team Code" and generate a code (keep this code to send to members)
  • Select the three dots next to the Team name, click and select "get link to team"
  • Send the link and code to anyone you would like to join
