Photography

Have you ever thought about adding photography to your classroom projects? Why photography? To nudge students to view the world through another lens, open creative outlets, and lead into meaningful conversations.

Below are ideas for integrating photography into your classroom
  • Creative Stories - Students take pictures around the classroom and create stories for the photos.
  • Project 365 - One picture a day of the same place and/or thing/person is taken to see how things change over time and pay more attention to details.
  • Photo of the Day - Sites such as National Geographic's Photo of the Day can be used to inspire discussions and curiosity.
  • Eyes Everywhere - Students create characters using googly eyes on objects around the room which turn into a story or comic strip.
  • Scavenger Hunt - Sites such as GooseChase make it easy to create curriculum focused scavenger hunts which can be answered via photos or videos.

Getting Started

To get started integrating photography into your classroom, there is little to purchase and you might have everything you need already available.  If you have any device with a camera, you are ready to go! If you don't below are a few inexpensive options:
  • Ask for donations of old cell phones, tablets, and/or cameras.
  • Create a pinhole or other DIY camera
  • Purchase an inexpensive camera.
